Attendees of PAX 2007 will easily remember this adorable Guitar Hero cosplayer. Last year she stumbled across my photos of her on my flickr account and since then we have became PAX buddies.
My real life name is Kat, but my alter ego is Kameron Derek, she’s more adventurous. I live in the Emerald City, the video game capital!
Is it true you do professional modeling?
Not really- I do some interesting photo shoot things. I have been Altair, Pandora from Guitar Hero, a psychopath, little red riding hood, a flight mechanic, and more. It’s really just an artistic outlet.
I did get to be a promo girl for the Fremont Oktoberfest after PAX, though- that was hilariously embarrassing. You can see my latest photo shoots at my Flickr: http://flickr.com/photos/kamde/sets/
Are you a hardcore gamer, if so what are some of your favorite games?
That sounds so hot! I love and promote video games to the young and old at my work place. I’m trying to start a video game club. I was raised on King’s Quest, Secret Agent, and Tetris. These days my top five games would be Psychonauts, Assassin’s Creed, Perfect Dark(N64), Lego Star Wars, and Rock Band.
Was PAX ‘07 the first one you attended and who did you dress as?
Actually ‘06 was my first one, and I’m hooked! I have not been to any other cons. I went as Pandora from GH2, Feathers outfit. On Saturday I wore a pink and black corset with a tutu, just for fun.
How hard was it for you to assemble your costume?
Not too hard, I’m a procrastinator. I assembled it all Saturday night. I hot glued the individual feathers to pieces of cardstock inside my shirt. Despite being a Girl Scout I can not sew.
The white boots were hard to find in the middle of August.
How was everyones reaction to you on the show floor, did you find your self in the middle of a lot of pictures?
Oh my, they were so great! It was definitely cool to have people shouting your(character) name at you. I was standing next to a huge line as everyone shuffled by they held their cameras up and yelled my name. I threw up the horns every time, and tried really hard not to give a big smile! Pandora doesn’t seem like the kinda girl who would flash her teeth for a photo op.
Were there more or less cosplayers than you expected at PAX ‘07?
More than I was expecting actually! In ‘06 during the PA panel someone asked Tycho what he thought of cosplayers and the entire audience booed. He declined to comment. I think that inspired me, oddly enough, and judging by the attendees reactions last year, they weren’t actually THAT against it!
Do you plan on cosplaying for PAX ‘08, if so what sort of characters do you have in mind?
Yes, I do. I’m currently doing my research(reading her comics), and I have my outfit ready to go. She is from DC and she originally appeared on the cartoon show that I loved as a little girl. The outfit is really tight, and I have to get used to callin’ my special man “Puddin’.” My friend Lisa(who went as Judy Nails with me last year) will be another female from that same comic/show/movie.
The other day we are going to do Cartoon Network characters.
I loved how interactive the booths were. There was the booth babe photo op, OneUp’s ID cards, Xbox givin’ tangible GamerCards, the Rock Band stage, etc.
Do you have any funny PAX ‘07 stories you can share?
Yes! I was waiting in line for the Minibosses. They decided it would be a smart idea to actually WEAR their merch. So one of them takes off their shirt, and Wil Wheaton jumps up and comes over saying, “Hey! Don’t take off your shirt! How am I supposed to compete with that! I don’t want to show these people this *lifts his shirt up*!” So I pointed out, but you JUST did! And he turns to me and says, “No, I did not, young attractive girl!” teehee!
Also, MrPulsar(of TGSA-comics) and I met after he had beat a Guitar Hero tourney. We just wanted to take a pic with him cuz of his shirt. Turns out he posts that pic on kotaku. com, so I start messaging him, and now we are roommates!
Do you have any tips for first time cosplayers?
1. Research your person/thing
2. Assume the character! Be memorable, don’t disappoint fans
3. Wear a costume that flatters your body- don’t make us uncomfortable wearing or being someone that doesn’t suit you.
The way I see cosplaying is the ultimate outlet for sharing your love and dedication for something you enjoy. I mean…you are becoming a character from it!!!
I will always be a game or cartoon character because that’s what I love!
Thanks for the interview looking forward to you costumes this year.
See you there!
